How to Connect a Portable Generator to a Home

A typical portable generator cannot supply power to appliances that consume too much energy, like a heater, air conditioner, or stove

Power outages are not uncommon and can occur unexpectedly. A portable generator is a convenient tool that can come to your rescue when the main power supply fails. A properly connected portable generator can provide temporary emergency power to the essentials like TV, refrigerator, and home lighting till the restoration of the power supply.

However, a typical portable generator cannot supply power to appliances that consume too much energy, like a heater, air conditioner, or stove. So, let's discuss how to connect a portable generator to the home.

Determine the essential home appliances

The portable generator cannot power all home appliances. Therefore, the first step is determining the essential appliances and checking their wattage and power requirements. For example, a petrol-powered generator with a 3500W rated power can run lighting, fans, TV, and refrigerator. You can find the rated power on the generator body or the user manual.

Select the wiring system

Several wiring options are available to connect the portable generator to the home. Before choosing any method, contact local authorities to know about any specific legal requirements for your area. The two most common and popular options are:

  • Interlock kit: This is the simplest and the most affordable option. The interlock kit needs correct and safe installation to prevent hazards. It requires the current breaker box to have adequate space to connect it to the generator. If buying a new breaker box, ensure to hire professionals for its installation. Also, it is essential to ensure that the interlock kit matches the specific breaker box. To avoid issues, purchase the same brand interlock kit and the breaker box.

  • Manual transfer switch: Although expensive and requiring a professional installation, most people prefer a manual transfer switch due to safety, legality, and avoiding the complications associated with an interlock kit. The transfer switch is a small device that helps power the entire circuit in the house with the portable generator without the need to run power cords.

Install inlet box hookup

An electrician can install the hookup outside the house correctly. It contains a recessed male connector and connects to the indoor panel system. Professionals ensure safe and up-to-code installation to avoid problems and potential risks.

Place the generator

Before placing the generator, you can call a professional to check up on the entire setup. Then, use the cable with the portable generator and place the generator as far as possible to protect the home from fire and prevent hazardous emissions from getting inside the house.

Plug everything

Plug the portable generator into the hookup and turn it about 15 degrees to complete the connection. Then plug the attachment cable into the generator. Ensure the engine has sufficient oil and the throttle is positioned correctly. Read the manufacturer's instructions to start the engine. Turn on the generator main on the breaker. Flip the system breaker and turn on the appliances slowly. Repeat all the steps in reverse order after the portable generator is no longer required.

Keep the lights on!

A portable generator is helpful during power outages. Although connecting a portable generator to the home can seem exciting, it is risky. Therefore, it is always best to seek the help of a residential electrician to learn the process thoroughly before going for DIY.
